holidays & the next generation(s)

I have no clue how DH's family traditions are going to change as the kids move out, get married, and have kids of their own. That being said DH's Bro & SIL are going to be grandparents soonish.

I'm just going to sit back, and go with the flow

two things I want to make this year are chocolate pecan pie and pumkin bread muffies

(DS will be with his dad for Turkey Day, and DM said she's getting tired of being hauled back and forth every holiday - I'm going to go see her one day over the break)

Re: holidays & the next generation(s)

An interesting thing happened today wrt to traditions-- I was telling a 14 year old boy that I make cinnamon buns every year on Dec 13 for Santa Lucia and he took out his notebook and wrote that down. He liked it and said he wanted to do that, too.

Kids will pick and choose which traditions they like, and they'll adapt those to their own family's needs.

Re: holidays & the next generation(s)

Funny thing about adapting traditions....

I decided to change one this year and after it was over and I had time to think on it, it occurred to me that I'm not changing the tradition, I am resorting it!!!

My DM changed it. She has been miserable ever since. Changing it back made it better.

Now the question remains -- why was she permitted to really change the tradition but gave me resistance?

but Lucy ... she's the one who made the change ... made it "her's" (could be she couldn't admit she'd made a mistake)

Re: holidays & the next generation(s)

You are right that she made it hers. I don't think she was ready for me to make it mine even though she hadn't done it herself in a decade.

Re: holidays & the next generation(s)

Was there some reason she changed it in the first place? Was she trying to put some kind of unhappiness or bad memory behind her?

I have "family traditions" that I have jettisoned because they represented (in my mind) people, things, or places that I moved past and didn't want to have be part of my life anymore.
