Thumbs up Credit where credit is due...

Today, for the first time in her 13.5 years, the cat helped us out, BIG TIME.

DH loathes and detests the cat. I quite like her, but she has her disadvantages.

Last weekend, someone dumped some chickens opposite us, there were 10 young ones (maybe 12 - 20 weeks old?), and an adult rooster.

The weather has been pretty good this week, and despite the short daylight hours, we managed to catch all 10 of the young ones by luring them into a makeshift trap with food. They are pretty nice, docile chickens, and most seem to be female. Friends were happy to take them. They are all doing fine.

The adult rooster drove us NUTS because, no matter what we did, he would avoid going into the trap, AND choose to roost in the dense (bush/woods/forest) just outside our window and crow every couple of hours during the night. We made futile attempts to catch him when he was settling down for the night, we lunged after him as we all crashed trough the bush, we swore and made rude gestures and loud derogatory comments. None helped.

Today, he was strutting around laughing at me, when the cat noticed him, fortuitously near the trap. They eyed each other up rather warily for a few minutes, until the cat got bored, and smelt the cat food in the trap. - Yes, chickens like cat food. And anything. Cat goes into the trap to eat the food. DH and i watching, just wanted to kill her. ROOSTER watching cat intently from about 1.5 meters/yards away however clearly thinks "Oooooh, that looks GOOD", waits patiently until cat leaves - you have to pull a string to close the door, and lets face it, cat's attention span is 30 sec...... Rooster then goes into trap and bang! gets the door closed. He's gone to our friends as well, but may end up as dinner soon.

We are both THRILLED to have caught the rooster, but pained to give the cat credit. Unfortunately, DH is convinced rooster would not have gone into the trap unless he could see the cat emerge unscathed.

Good Kitty! xxx
