sleep apnea

I apparently am having it intermittently :(

Some nights I snore awfully - the next day is when I crash ....

DH and I had plans for a date night yesterday (note the HAD). I fought sleep for hours after I got up, had a killer headache, and finally gave up/in and slept. I spent most of yesterday sleeping, and I still have a headache today.

I am so pizzed - I'm going to be calling the dentist and the orthodontist to find out who can make me a mouth guard - I'd rather wear a mouth guard nightly than feel awful .... and I really don't want to miss date night again :)

{and while DH was disappointed, he was wonderful to me}

What were the results of that sleep study you did?

Did the study connect sleep apnea with TMJ disorders?

I clench my teeth at night. I have a mouth guard from the local sports store. I wear it when I notice I become aware that I'm clenching.

Re: sleep apnea

kaykay- the results were that I have insignificant apnea.

Medically, it might register as insignificant, but from my point of view it isn't. 1 night of snoring/apnea = unable to function the next day, and some issues the day after that.

lucy - nothing was said about TMJ

The only recommendation they had for me was "don't sleep on your back" and I'd be fine.

snerk - do they make adult sized baby side sleepers/anti-roll supports?

You can retrain your sleeping position.

If a doctor didn't recommend a mouth guard, I wouldn't go that route. First, you stop wearing them over time. Second, they aren't sexy, not even in purple. ;)

but they're sexier than a C-PAP

IF I had significant sleep apnea, the mouth guard is an option (other options were C-PAP or surgery)

Re: sleep apnea

Okay, um, there's no "nice" way of saying this, but I find that when I am on the heavy side I snore. It builds on itself because snoring means I don't get a good night's sleep, a poor night's sleep hurts my energy levels during the day, low energy levels during the day mean less exercise and more snacking, and there we are stuck in the cycle.

I also snore when my head is congested so I am pretty diligent about saline nasal spray when I shower and, when needed, OTC nasal sprays before bed.

That's not really an answer for you, as I don't know where your weight is relative to normal, just something to consider. Whenever I start snoring at night, that's my cue to realign my diet/exercise habits. (That and the fact that my clothes are all too tight :p)

And yes, Lucy is right about retraining your sleep position. I had to do it last summer when I had a shoulder injury. You can use a body pillow for that. :)

I think I'll try DH before the pillow :)

I've been heavier (:( ), but I do want to lose some weight. According to my Dr. (GP) my BMI is fine for my age (24 BMI, yikes).

The sleep study Dr said that losing some weight may help.

I never updated this thread....loops

Anyway I got an "L" shaped pillow that's great for sleeping on my side and prevents me from rolling onto my back.

I've also lost a lot of weight recently.
